French videogames journalist here, I will write here what I've seen and experienced with EA France. Firstly, EA doesn't invite anybody to press events.
They have a very precise list of journalists, bloggers and influencers, who aren't "hostile" to EA in any way. They want their products to be advertised and talked about in articles, posts and everywhere else on the web. By inviting journalists, and giving them free stuff (mostly goodies, but free premium versions of the game too), they in fact offer you an indirect pact with them : We give you that, so you behave and give us visibility.
But I got blacklisted from all of their events, after publishing an article exposing EA and DICE's lies. Back in the day, I was invited to all of their events, had to sign NDAs (Non-Disclosure Agreements, but that's normal), and I had the opportunity to talk with EA France staff, and even DICE developers. Of course they're all very hyped about Battlefield 1, so they try to (over)sell their game. Typical, interviewing developers will give you informations about the game but they of course won't talk about the problems.
I remember back then, everyone was wondering where France and Russia were in the trailers. People, here in France, were then disappointed to learn that the French would be in a DLC and not in the game at launch, especially since it's one of the most impacted countries of WW1. This caught my attention, and I've started talking to people I knew well at EA France. I was in luck, the lady in charge of press relations was my former editor in chief's girlfriend. And she told me that DICE simply forgot about the French, and this is why they're gonna be a paid-DLC. This is how I've learnt that they were ordered by EA's HQ not to tell anything about that. This was confirmed, to me, by the former EA France's Product manager : "DICE made a mistake, and forgot about the French". I knew I was onto something, and started contacting other EA France employees. Surprisingly, most of them didn't wish to tell me anything about that matter. Only one confirmed me the order they've been given : the press (and therefore, the players) musn't know about that.
I've managed to record their stories while keeping my 3 witnesses anonymous. After publishing my article (with my editor in chief's approval), we knew we would be in trouble if EA found out about it. It was no surprise that, the day after, EA France's Communications Director (not the press relations manager) contacted us : she was FU-RIOUS. She threatened to sue us for libel if we didn't delete the article. It was a few months after I dared giving a bad review of FIFA 16, so she already didn't like me. They then realized that they would confirm what we were exposing them for, by doing so. Instead they've contacted one of our most important national newspaper, here in France, "Le Monde", and they've had Julien Wera, DICE's former Global Brand Director, interviewed by one of their journalist. This dude simply came back on the missing French army, and repeated that "they're so special, and important part of history, that we needed a special DLC for them". After this was released in "Le Monde" newspaper, we were told by one of their PR officers that the media I was working for, and myself, were permanently blacklisted from any Electronic Arts events.
This, of course, caused me troubles with my former employer, but they even said they'd permanently ban my EA Account and deactivate all products I had on Origin (but they eventually didn't). And finally, they demanded that we provide them with the names of the three people who accepted to witness. In France, the Law protects us in this case : sources protection. So they eventually gave up, blacklisting both me and the media I was working for were enough. So yeah, this more or less confirms that EA and DICE are liars, and manipulative dickheads. I just wanted to throw some boogers at them because I didn't like the fact that they presented Battlefield 1 to be some kind of homage to WW1, and at the same time "forgetting" about the French and Russian armies. A mistake they'd make PLAYERS pay for, with money, in the disguise of DLC content.
This is what I wanted to expose, but unfortunately a big company like this has power and means to shut your loud mouth. If this happens in the videogames industry I just can't imagine what kind of dark things happen in other sectors. I'm now an independant journalist, imagine what my clients think when I have to explain to them why I can't attend EA events. Thank your for reading my testimony, and sorry about my not-so-great english.
